Profile

Dr Matteo is an expert medical consultant in Musculoskeletal, Sport and Exercise Medicine, based in Central London. He has a permanent position at University College London Hospitals NHS Trust (UCLH), where he is Clinical Lead for Musculoskeletal Medicine at the Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine (RLHIM). He practises privately at The London Clinic and Fortius Clinic London.

He has extensive experience in professional sport, caring for athletes at both grassroots and elite levels. He is active in teaching and clinical research as Honorary Clinical Lecturer at University College London (UCL) and an examiner for both UCL Medical School and the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine (FSEM UK). His research interests include nutritional supplements for chronic musculoskeletal pain and ultrasound-guided surgical procedures (e.g. carpal tunnel and trigger finger release). He lectures nationally and internationally on back pain, non-surgical spinal interventions and ultrasound-guided procedures.

As a dual-qualified osteopath and medical doctor, Dr Matteo brings a truly integrated, functional and holistic approach to treatment. His expertise covers complex and challenging conditions affecting the body’s joints, muscles, bones and soft tissues—from head to toe. He has specialist experience in back, neck, and shoulder pain, as well as jaw disorders (TMJ dysfunction), with an interest in sports injuries and chronic pain syndromes.

He is highly skilled in regenerative medicine, using shockwave therapy and advanced orthobiologic treatments such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy to treat arthritis and persistent musculoskeletal pain. In addition, he offers ultrasound-guided spinal injections for chronic and acute back pain, providing highly targeted relief for patients who may be seeking alternatives to surgery.

Dr Matteo believes that optimal recovery comes from understanding the whole person. He is committed to giving each patient comprehensive, evidence-based medical advice and treatment, addressing not only physical and biomechanical factors but also lifestyle and wellbeing. Whether treating a long-standing pain condition or a new sporting injury, his goal is to help every patient regain movement, strength and confidence.

Outside of work, Matteo enjoys Yoga, gymnastics and skiing in the Italian Alps. He lives in London with his partner and three spirited cats.

"I have been seeing Dr Bernardotto since I had my first child 7 years ago. I originally had back pain and he did a comprehensive assessment and did osteopathy and advised on exercises. I was pleased that this completely resolved. I then developed shoulder pain from carrying two young children. He again did a comprehensive assessment - including an ultrasound and performed osteopathy and Accupuncture. A combination of the this plus the exercises he recommended meant it completely resolved again. Finally I had an ankle injury last year after running regularly. Dr Bernardotto - assessed my ankle and did an ultrasound. He gave me ankle exercises and then did a steroid injection and my ankle pain has gone! Fantastic sports doctor. Holistic, comprehensive and really cares!!"
